Why I chose to become an indie author

Updated: Mar 8, 2021

This book was a long journey. When I read Fifty Shades of Grey about a decade ago, I knew I had something similar languishing in a bunch of college notebooks that served as my journals. In fact, I always think about the inspiration of this book especially when January rolls around.

They say to write what you know. So I did. Of course, like most authors, I wanted the glory and validation of being picked up by a traditional publisher. But having a day job, I couldn't devote that much time to querying. The book itself took me three years to finish after putting it through a professional editor. I sent out multiple queries keenly targeted to the literary agents interested in the genre and/or looking for that something special. But I couldn't get a nibble.

Patience has never been my strong suit and at the end of the day, I realized this story meant more to me than what my final product might look like after going through an agent and a publisher. It was more about fulfilling a promise to myself anyway.

Perhaps, like in the book, it was fate that no one responded. I ended up putting it out my way without anyone interfering with the creative vision. So now it's all on me to get it out there. But that's never stopped me before.

I truly hope you enjoy taking this romantic retro road trip to Boston. Lord knows, it was quite a ride. #newadult #twistedromance #collegeromance
